Haring: lay a decent trail
Fancy laying something other than excuses? Have a crack at haring. Start by speaking to the Hare Raiser and teaming up with a seasoned hare. Two heads are better than one, even when both are full of rubbish.
Scout it before you shout about it
Walk the route, choose a clear meeting point and think about the whole pack. Plan regroup points and sensible options for walkers. Check the light, weather, water and ways back. A shortcut through a locked gate is not a plan.
Publish the useful bits
Put the start time, exact meeting point, directions, hares, cost and anything special to bring on the hareline. Tell the pack promptly if the run changes or is cancelled.
Give a proper chalk talk
Explain your marks, checks, false trails, shortcuts and finish arrangements. Make sure newcomers understand them. Use clear marks and leave a route that the back of the pack can still follow.
Bring everyone home
Arrange a sweep, know who’s out on trail and respect neighbours, paths and property. The aim is a good evening, not a missing-persons subplot. Debrief afterwards; the pack will probably supply the criticism for free.
